Necmi Akşit
I am Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Education at İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University and Director of the MA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language Program. My work brings together graduate-level language teacher education, English for Academic Purposes and English Medium Instruction, research methods, thesis supervision, curriculum design, and quality management in higher education.
I hold a PhD in Educational Science, with a concentration in Educational Administration and Planning, as well as an MA and a BSc in English Language Teaching, all from Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Türkiye.
My professional background spans English language education, graduate-level teacher education, academic leadership, and institutional governance. Before joining Bilkent University’s Graduate School of Education, I worked in the university’s School of English Language across both pre-sessional and in-sessional English language programmes. In that context, I served as Curriculum Coordinator, Head of the Teaching Unit for the pre-sessional programme, and Head of the English Language Support Unit for the in-sessional programme.
In the Graduate School of Education, I teach graduate-level courses in pre-service and in-service language teacher education and supervise graduate research. My leadership and governance experience includes serving as Director of Teacher Education, Assistant Director of the Graduate School of Education, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Education, member of the Faculty of Education Board, member of the Graduate School of Education Board and Executive Board, and member of the University Senate.
Across these roles, I have led teacher education programs, directed an MA program with nationally recognized teaching certificate and IB Diploma Programme teaching certificate components, contributed to university-level academic governance, and supported curriculum development and quality management processes in higher education. This combination has shaped my expertise in preparing English language, EAP/EMI practitioners, and IB Diploma Programme Teacher Education and research-informed language education in higher education contexts and related international education contexts.
My research interests include educational policy, English for Academic Purposes and English Medium Instruction, pre-service and in-service language teacher education, critical literacy, and the relationship between language education, institutional policy, and academic literacies in higher education.
